Catrine Community Hydro Project

Great Glen Consulting (GGC) was appointed by Catrine Community Renewables (CCR) in September 2015 to act as their Client Project Manager for the refurbishment of the once functional Turbines which had been part of the successful Mill and Bleachworks around Catrine, but, which had become redundant in the 1950’s.

The renewable element of the project was the key revenue generator, this would support CCR and help them to deliver a range of other projects. The project was under immense time pressures when GGC were appointed. The reason for this pressure was around the Feed in Tariff (FITs) deadline.

If this deadline wasn’t met the consequences on the revenue generation was severe, as, it would affect the business case of the project, thus rendering it unviable. With the delivery date set GGC and the team in Catrine had little over a year in which to get through the due diligence & financial close process before funding was available to place orders for turbine refurbishment and the construction part of the project. The key objectives for GGC were to get the project, and the Client investor ready, manage the due diligence process with the funders, Renewable Energy Investment Fund (REIF) and Social Investment Scotland (SIS) and then oversee the project to commissioning.

GGC really understood the funders requirements in terms of what made a project bankable and it structured the contract packages to meet our requirements.

Clearly there was already a well-established relationship that GGC had with lenders which proved invaluable and this allowed GGC to help us navigate the complexities of due diligence and get the project to financial close.

With the hard work completed this created the opening for the release of funds which ultimately allowed our project to be completed on time. GGC put in place project controls to ensure that the implementation phase proceeded on time, ensuring suppliers and most importantly CCR the Client were aware of what they needed to do and when they needed to do it by.

Catrine now has two working Turbines, both are generating power to the Grid and allowing us to get the full FITs revenue, it has been a long and difficult road, made easier by working with some great partners, the Turbines are also a wonderful piece of engineering and will in the future become a visitors Centre.

I have no hesitation in recommend Great Glen Consulting to other clients and Community Groups.

Glenurquhart Care Project

As Project Manager Susan has wholeheartedly taken on the project to build twelve amenity houses for the elderly and vulnerable people in the Community. The Project had the potential to attract significant objection due to its proximity to a much larger development but by her approach of inclusion and a wide view of stakeholder interests she has brought the Community along with her obtaining the funding to take the project through Planning and towards construction at this stage.

She is hardworking and well organised and has led a small group of volunteer Directors of the Company which she set up to enable successful completion of this project.
